Golf Themed Cake

Print Friendly and PDF

I love my dad.  So much.  Enough to learn how to frost a cake with a cake decorating tip for his retirement party last year.  Which is something that I could never, ever, be great at.  I've just never been crafty...I don't think that I got that badge in Girl Guides.  But I do think that the golf-themed cake still turned out pretty well, all things considered.  This could be a great cake for your dad/husband/brother's celebration of their birthday/father's day/retirement.  Or hey, let's not discriminate here; it's great for golf-loving moms/wives/sisters/friends too!

I went to Michael's to buy the cake decorating tip, and may I just say that there is a whole world that I never even knew existed at Michaels in the cake aisle, including a whole section just for the various types of cake decorating tips alone.  To put it in perspective, the tip that I selected was called, "Grass," so that's how specific the cake tip selection gets.  Overwhelming.  I purchased my cake tip and left.

"Grass" Cake Tip
My dad is a golf freak, so I knew when I found this golf-themed cake on Pinterest on the Changing my Destiny blog that he would love it.  The only problem is that in addition to not being a good 'cake tip user' I am also not a good cake baker (for proof click here).  Since this cake was for my dad's retirement, I really didn't want to screw it up, so this cake 'recipe' uses a Betty Crocker mix, straight out of the box.

Oh, and also Duncan Hines frosting and green food colouring, to boot.  Oops.

It's a DIY simple cake - just grass, a hole, and a ball.  My dad thought it was a hole in one!

Golf Cake

Serves: 15 - 20 people

You Will Need
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix to make a 13 x 9-inch cake (plus necessary ingredients in cake mix instructions like eggs, oil, and milk)
  • 1 - 2 containers vanilla frosting
  • 1 small bottle green food colouring
  • 1 'Grass' cake tip
  • 1 cake decorating bag or Ziploc bag with the corner cut off
  • 1 juice glass
  • 1 golf ball
Directions
Prepare cake according to package directions for a 13 x 9-inch rectangular cake size.  Allow to cool, then transfer to your serving dish.

Meanwhile, scoop the frosting into a bowl, and add green food colouring until you have the desired colour green that you want (warning - this could take a couple hundred drops depending on the colour of green that you want!).  Put frosting into the fridge and chill until ready to use (this helps to make your 'grass' less droopy, especially if you are making this cake on a hot summer day like I was).

When ready, spread a thin layer of green frosting over the entire cake, as your 'base.'

Now you are going to make the hole.  To do so, start by lightly greasing a juice glass that has a rim that is the same size that you would like the hole to be (such as my cat-themed glass pictured here), then push the glass into your cake, turn once, and remove straight up and out of the cake.

Gratuitous pictures of the cat-themed glass from all angles.

You will be left with a big hole in your cake.  This is good!  If the bottom of your hole is showing through, use some of the cake that you removed and push it down into the hole until there are no patches.  Eat the rest of the cake you removed.

Like so

Using a cake decorating bag or a another medium-sized plastic bag (such as a Zip-Loc bag) with the corner cut off, attach your decorating tip and fill the bag with green frosting.  Start making grass all over your cake!

You are almost done...just pop a golf ball into the hole, and voila!

Enjoy your golf themed cake!  Bonus points if you make the cake and frosting from scratch.

  1. Such amazing Golf themed cake it was. I love cakes a lot and when it is a special themed one, it is more exciting thing. For my son’s birthday I also would be hosting a Disney party at the garden LA venue so recently I am finding the d├ęcor as well as cake ideas online. Hoping that the planning would be completed soon so we can take the action.

Thus, it is important that you become aware on what features to check when shopping from the wide variety of golf bags offered in online and brick and mortar stores. https://golf-hook.com/reviews/best-golf-drivers/ This is because you might be too frail to carry a full golf bag as you go along the golf course.

  8. The sunday golf bag is typically a very lightweight material that can be compressed and folded down to fit into a smaller space. The average weight of one of these is between 2 to 4 pounds when it is empty and with no stand included.
